Among other things, John Feeny writes about population issues. One of his commenters pointed to some academic research in the area and a discussion ensued. That’s usually the way with blogs, but this time there’s a unusual twist. The commenter put John in touch with the scientist who, although unfamiliar with the blogging world, decided to participate. Thanks for the link, and for kicking off the comments.
I sense this will lead to a good deal more fruitful discussion. As I’ve read up on the research involved, I’ve come to appreciate it more. But it leads to enough questions that I’m sure Russ is right that there will never be an argument to answer all questions.
(And note the use of smilies, with which I obviously have a love/hate relationship.

You evil man, another animated smilely!
When I have more time I’ll try to better frame what I’m trying to get at in my comments on your post. In general, I’d like to know if Russ has some recommendations or if he sees himself merely as a scientist whose only job is to report facts.
BTW, I thought the discussion under this article on Grist had some good comments on the topic. John Fish Kurmann does a good job of arguing for Russ’s view. I still have some questions, which I hope I’ll be clearer on after Russ’s next go-round on GIM.
