This short web page, Hooked on a System That No Longer Serves, saved me from writing a post I’d been considering. Please read it and watch this related video from the same source:
Dave Gardner produced this public service announcement last week to submit to ABC News for the upcoming special, Earth 2100. The spokeswoman is Citizen-Powered Media board member Stephanie Gardner. I can’t wait for Dave wrap up his documentary Hooked on Growth, and you can help him complete it.
More to come on this film and Dave’s approach.
[update: Dave says one of the most important things to do now is get the word out about his project so when the film is released there is as big an audience as possible eagerly waiting. Note too he's been invesrting his time, energy, and I suspect not a little of his own money in this for four years, in between doing his day job (also film related) and being a normal human being like the rest of us. The parts of the project I've been exposed to so far are fascinating, insightful, and more critical to the current world situation that ever before. If enough of us help, maybe Hooked on Growth can compete with An Inconvenient Truth for the most influential documentary award if anybody is offering one of those. Then I can stop writing this blog and relax.

We have so much in common. That’s probably why we’re both UUs. Besides my personal blog linked above, I have a county blog for county solutions: http://community.livejournal.com/prince_georges
and

I put the population video on my Facebook. I have family members who are fundamentalist and love big families. I made a note that they can adopt, teach, do foster or child care and/or mentor. I’m promoting an organization I recently found out about that recruits mentors for children whose parents are incarcerated in PG Co.

Dear Andy,
Thanks for all your morally courageous and intellectually honest efforts, even though approaching threats to human wellbeing and environmental health loom ominously before us. Imagine what would immediately occur if everyone followed your good example. In the face of such daunting global challenges as humanity confronts in our time, it is so easy to curse the darkness and, by so doing, choose NOT to light candles, as you are doing. Keep lighting candles,
Andy.
Always,
Steve
Thanks for your clear voice.
More voices…….we need many more voices speaking out loudly and often. Time is being wasted by those with wealth and power who adamantly defend unsustainable status quo overconsumption, overproduction and overpopulation activities of the human species that are overwhelming and threatening to ravage the Earth in our time. Because these distinctly human activities could soon become patently unsustainable, necessary behavior change has to occur fast. If more members of the human family do not speak out to vigorously resist what the leaders of the human community are demanding all of us do now as we strive to ravenously overconsume Earth’s resources; to relentlessly hoard wealth; and to overproduce unnecessary stuff, then the planetary home we are inhabiting and overpopulating could be made uninhabitable for our children and life as we know it by 2012.
Спасибо за статью оказалась очень полезной.
Thanks to great new leadership in 2009 a social transformation of a hard to imagine kind, a radical transformation not witnessed by anyone now alive, is in the offing. Perhaps powerful human forces of sensibly-directed “intentional will” and emotional contagion, engendered by widespread deliberative discussions within the family of humanity, will lead to a rapid paradigm shift in thought and a more healthy, reality-oriented set of humane {to replace profane} social values. When the new way of thinking about the world we inhabit and better social values are reasonably mobilized and become ubiquitously evident in the self-limiting actions of members of participatory democracies {replacing the conspicuous over-consumption and excessive hoarding activities of the self-absorbed leaders of governing oligarchies of recent years}, I expect the family of humanity will find its way from the selfish thinking, profane values and patently unsustainable lifestyles, such as we see today, to a sustainable and more fully human future world order on this sacred Earth.
Захватывающе. Зачет! и ниипет!
Неоднократно доводилось читать подобные посты на англоязычных блогах, но это не значит что ваш пост мне не понравился
Not enough scientists have been willing to speak “truth to power”. It seems that too many experts have chosen elective mutism and, thereby, allowed science to be suppressed, censored, gag rules imposed and countless distractions presented whenever reasonable and sensible evidence would come into conflict with what the economic powerbrokers and their bought-and-paid-for politicians determine, out of their own selfish interests, to be real and true.
Science appears to present the leaders of the global political economy with evidence of politically inconvenient and economically inexpedient truths. If that is so, who knows, perhaps the super-rich and powerful people among us might learn something that leads them to exemplify values other than the goodness of greed and personal aggrandizement as well as the false rightfulness of living unsustainably large and irresponsibly free in the planetary home God blesses us inhabit.
After 8 long dark years of denial, duplicity and death-dealing, it is surely a breath of fresh air that President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Finally, leadership with vision and hope has been restored to a lost world. Perhaps now we can be encouraged by this great man so that others will exemplify his kind of new leadership; so that, as the Nobel Prize Committee stated to and for all in the world, more leaders will stand up, speak out loudly and clearly for “diplomacy…founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.” If ever there was reason to hope for a good enough future for the children, it is now. The vision of what is best for the majority of humanity and not for a malignantly narcissistic, pathologically arrogant and extremely greedy minority, is something easy to apprehend and even easier to actualize in democracies in which the majority does really rule. The majority of people in too many democracies in our time have been surreptitiously manipulated by a remarkably tiny group of super-rich and powerful people who appear to have maniacally exploited democratic principles and practices for their own selfish interests…..come what may for the majority of humanity, the future of children, life as we know it and the integrity of Earth.
